Throughout my life, I've grown up seeing the LGBTQ+ community. I had friends and family who are a part of the community. I've gotten to see this community up-close, and I've gotten to see how people of the community are affected. Although I'm straight, I feel like I've been directly affected by the LGBTQ+ community because of my loved ones. I've seen them be belittled by others, I've seen hateful actions or words towards them. Because of this, I do anything I can to make them feel safe. They all know that I'm a safe space for them when the world is not. So you're probably thinking, "how can I be an ally, too?"
- First of all, respect pronouns! Your loved one will feel so much better knowing that someone will respect their preferred pronouns. If you don't know what pronouns they prefer, ask them! It doesn't hurt to ask and they will be more than happy to tell you.
- Second, get involved! Getting involved with the community can be something as small as sharing a pro LGBTQ+ post, or something as big as donating towards LGBTQ+ organizations, or going to pride celebrations.
- Third, talk about the community openly and freely. Don't be afraid to ask questions, and don't be afraid to openly discuss your support. This will make your loved one(s) feel safe.
There are many ways to help the community, these were just a few. Don't be afraid to ask others how you can help too. Just because you're not a direct member of the community, that doesn't mean you can't help. Do your best, somebody will appreciate it. :)
