Transgender Awareness Month

Hi all!

I just wanted to tell you all a little bit more about Transgender Awareness Month, which just so happens to start today! November is the month we we celebrate transgender history and the transgender community. This is a super important month for me as an ally, so I plan to spend my whole month educating myself.

One of the main goals of the month is to educate others about the discrimination and even violence that the community may face. Throughout the month, you may see organizations and communities hosting events and different activities to bring awareness to the community.

Supporting and advocating for the transgender community is an important way to show your support and helps create a safe space for all.

November 20th is the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which is a day dedicated to honoring the lives taken by anti-transgender violence. This day was established in 1999 by a transgender woman, Gwendolyn Ann Smith, in honor of Rita Hester, a transgender woman, who was brutally murdered. Take this day as an opportunity to mourn all that we've lost.

Transgender Awareness Week also takes place during the month. November 13th-19th participate in this week to raise awareness about the transgender community and address the issues that the community faces.

With all of these important events coming up, don't be afraid to show your support as an ally. If you have transgender loved ones, try to reassure them that you are a safe space for them and will always be there.

Be vocal. Be supportive. Be an ally.
